Jonah Willow has secured his first Grandmaster norm at a tournament in Norway. The event was held in the town of Fagernes, which is situated 114 miles north-west of Oslo. Jonah was first equal (second on tie-break) with GM Rinat Jumbayev of Kazakhstan with whom he drew his game in round 7. Jonah was unbeaten on 7/9, with a tournament rating of 2630, 210 points higher than his current rating of 2420 and scoring an outstanding 3.5/4 against Grandmaster opposition. One of his draws was against fellow British IM Ameet Ghasi from Birmingham, who also secured a GM norm. There were sixty competitors, including ten Grandmasters and fourteen International Masters.
Jonah’s games were notable for their exciting, tactical ideas, including a fine win against the Indian GM Sayantan Das, which is worthy of study: Fagernes International Autumn 2024 | GM • Round 8 • lichess.org
